MFA Aalreep

MFA means ‘Multi Functionele Accomodatie’, this is a new building type for 2 primary schools, childcare facility, with pre- and after school care, a sports hall and a community center in one.

At present these facilities exist on the site apart from the community center, they are located in Hoogvliet a postwar extension area of Rotterdam. The existing facilities were constructer about 50 years ago and are in desperate need of renewal. At the moment the four functions on the siteare housed in separate buildings almost like little islands in a see of playground.

Our intention is to group the buildings together in one complex. To enable the children to access the facilities as easy as possible and to combine and share communal functions.

The programme is arranged in a single bar like block. Positioned between the two existing schools allowing them to remain in use during its construction. The intention is to create a very sustainable building with maximum levels of fresh air. To achieve this and at the same time to make these intentions visible the building slopes 30 degrees away from the sun and 60 degrees towards the north. This creates natural shadow on the south side and extra natural light on the north side.

The extra air supply is made visible through the introduction of five atria which act like lungs extracting the old air from the building.

The building is conceived in a shiny aluminum skin to bring a sparkle to the grayness of this 1960’s neighborhood.
